An Italian Excellence
Malo’s story unfolds alongside the birth of Made in Italy — a movement defined by craftsmanship, authenticity, and effortless style admired across the world. At a time when fine knitwear bore only Scottish or English labels, Malo reimagined luxury from an Italian perspective: vibrant, sensual, and alive with artistry. Each collection combined heritage techniques with innovation — vivid color palettes, intricate stitches, and the tactile poetry of handwork. Through this creative courage, Malo earned its place in the history of Italian knitwear, bridging tradition and experimentation with enduring grace.
Founded in Portofino
It was the 1970s, and
the Jet Set spent their summers in Portofino — a vivid, romantic harbor of
color and light. It was here that Malo was conceived. As evening breezes
descended from the mountains to cool sun-touched shoulders, a new idea in luxury was born: to transform the weighty Scottish cashmere of the time into something feather-light, sensuous, and Italian. Malo introduced impalpable yarns in luminous colors, combining softness with modern ease. Production soon moved to Tuscany, a land of art and artisans, where craft and intuition intertwined. Founded in 1972 as Malo Tricot, the brand began a journey spun across five decades — creating knitwear that captures time, touch, and quiet luxury.
Opening of the production facility
In 1973, Malo opened its factory in Campi Bisenzio, near Florence — a valley woven with centuries of textile mastery, once sung by Dante himself. From these Tuscan roots grew a brand synonymous with Italian excellence. The following decades brought rapid expansion: boutiques in New York, Düsseldorf, Paris, and Tokyo, and a second atelier in Borgonovo Val Tidone, where the hum of wooden looms still meets modern machinery. Here, tradition and technology coexist — a dialogue between past and future, between the hands and the heart.
At the dawn of a new millennium
As a new century dawned, Malo entered an era of transformation — refining its vision, strengthening its image, and expanding globally. Esteemed designers such as Gianni Bugli, Alessandro Dell’Acqua, Tommaso Aquilano, Roberto Rimondi, Saverio Palatella, and Fabio Piras brought new creative energy to the brand. In 2006, Malo debuted on the New York runway to international acclaim. The late Anna Piaggi once called it “the finest cashmere house in the world.” It was a moment that reaffirmed Malo’s quiet mastery of luxury — not loud, but luminous.
A New Chapter
In 2019, Malo returned to its roots — to the art of pure Italian cashmere. The past became foundation, the future, a dream renewed. Today, the brand continues to weave the rarest fibers — vicuña, alpaca, baby llama, camel, mohair, silk, and Makò cotton — into creations that unite innovation and tradition. Malo remains a guardian of beauty and craft, an emblem of Italian savoir-faire.
Handmade
Handmade knitwear is the soul of Malo. Each piece requires an alchemy of gesture, patience, and precision. Through the skilled hands of master artisans, precious fibers are transformed into harmonious textures and refined silhouettes. Every thread, every knot, every movement carries intention. The result is a garment that feels alive — its softness, balance, and detail forming what Malo calls Yarn Couture: a slow, meticulous craft, yielding beauty that can be felt as much as seen.
Passed down from generation to generation
A Malo garment is meant to be passed down — a thread connecting generations. In its purest form, cashmere is one of nature’s most enduring fibers: soft yet strong, delicate yet resilient. within each holds the emotion it carries from skin to heart.
From the careful selection of raw fibers to their transformation by expert hands — spinning, linking, pressing, and perfecting — every step reflects nearly fifty years of devotion to craft. At Malo, quality is not a stage in production; it is the very soul of creation.
